I suggest you read the whole thing 1st, especially the wiki regarding the SDK tools for Android that the article links to (I stopped reading the wiki when I got to Linux, & as a result managed to miss out some instructions regarding Windows that was further down the page)

Well I'm a big fan of Avast Anti Virus on the PC. They also do a version for android. Apart from all the usual features you would expect there is a whole bunch of anti theft stuff including remote control via sms commands (if you lose your phone)
If you are Rooted, Avast Anti Virus can do a lot more.
eg
Firewall
Add a firewall to stop hackers. Disable an app's internet access when on WiFi and 3G and roaming mobile networks. (Works only on rooted phones.)
Remote Restart - if your phone gets nicked.
Reboot the phone by SMS command, which will lock the phone by asking for the SIM's PIN code (or pattern lock if you set it up). (Works only on rooted phones.) - This alone is worth it IMO
Plenty of other reasons for rooting, eg call recording, most apps can only record from the mic & speaker, but if you want to record from the line (to get both parties nice & clear) you would need root access.
Remove bloatware, all that stuff that the carrier installs that you dont really want, eg get rid of the vodafone boot up animation & put your own one on.
If you want to overclock for better performance, or underclock for better battery life, you would need root access.
There are loads of useful apps that require root access e.g. Ad blocker by Big Tin Can.com blocks ads before you download them, needs root access. The list is endless. Rooting isnt just about installing a custom ROM.
Me, I cant help but fiddle & tweak things. If it aint broke I gotta change it... until I break it!

Any pitfalls to watch out for on that guide?
And did you get any performance improvements from the phone? I am thinking of rooting mine because I am getting fed up with the lag. I was thinking of rooting it so I can go to a install that runs the cpu and 120% or so, to see if it helps. Nick
