Just wanted to welcome you to the site. I don't know anything about this, but I would suppose they told you this because 2G works better there. Hope someone can chime in with a definitive answer.

If your phone bounces between 3g and 2g allot it would definately be advisable to switch to 2g only or you will find yourself on the charger more than you should be.
This happened to my wife and me where we just moved with our old t-mobile phones.
