As an experiment, I took the sharp, jagged side of a brass key and attempted to scratch the screen just below the "Home" button. No luck! Even with a fair amount of pressure, there was no visible scratch! Now, that doesn't mean the screen is indestructible, but it should hold up under "normal" daily use. That said, I've always used belt-mounted pouches to keep my phones in, rather than a pocket. So, if you want to go "au naturel", just treat yourself to a nice holster for the phone.
